ASHEBORO, N.C. – George Brunnhoelzl III opened the 2012 season just like he finished the 2011 season during his NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship run – with a win at Caraway Speedway on Saturday night.

Although Brunnhoelzl started from the pole and led every lap it wasn’t easy, as he had to hold off Jason Myers on the final lap to win by just .236 seconds for his 12th career win and sixth at Caraway Speedway.

L.W. Miller followed Myers for third with Brandon Ward fourth and John Smith fifth. Daniel Hemric was sixth with Brian Loftin seventh and Burt Myers eighth. Gary Fountain Sr., and Rich Kuiken Jr. completed the top 10.

Although Brunnhoelzl has enjoyed recent success at Caraway Speedway he really didn’t know what to expect in the season opener.

“This is a brand new car and the guys did a great job building this car and Howard gives me great equipment,” Brunnhoelzl said. “We had a little bit of a problem with the steering but all in all it was a good day for us here at Caraway.”

For Jason Myers, he was all smiles after his second-place showing.

“Second place in one of these races is a big deal because you are racing the best of the best in these Whelen Southern Modifieds,” Jason Myers said. “Running second is good but knowing we had the fastest car at the end of the race really puts a lot of hope for the future for this race team especially here at Caraway where you have to run well to have a chance to win the championship.”

Miller finished third but was involved in an incident with Andy Seuss on Lap 93 on a restart when the drivers made contact in Turn 2 sending Seuss into the wall and ending his night.

Although the contact with Seuss didn’t end the night for Miller, he said he had nothing for Brunnhoelzl.

“The pit stop we made at halfway helped us a little, but he (Brunnhoelzl) had the best car all night long,” Miller said. “Jason (Myers) had the fastest car at the end and probably would have won the race if had gotten by me a little sooner.”

Daniel Hemric led the group of seven rookies in the field with his sixth-place finish to earn Sunoco Rookie of the Race honors, while John Smith won the Featherlite Move of the Race and Gary Fountain Sr. used his first career top-10 finish to win the Coca-Cola Move of the Race.

The race was slowed nine times by caution with one red flag for 17:58 after the Seuss-Miller incident on Lap 93.

With his victory, Brunnhoelzl locked up a spot in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at the UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway during next February’s Speedweeks.

Brunnhoelzl and the rest of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour competitors return to Caraway Speedway for the Farm Bureau Insurance 150 on Saturday, April 7.

Despite passing showers late in the afternoon, track workers and plenty of racers took to the track Saturday night at Mountain Speedway in an effort to dry the racing surface. The work was successful and the racing went off without a hitch. Kyle Ebersole of Hummelstown, PA drove to the front and then cruised to his second straight Modified victory. Steve Shultz of Drums notched his fourth Street Stock feature win of the season and Cody Roth of Kunkletown, PA steered clear of trouble to score his second FWD main event win of the year.

Allen Creveling led the Modified field to the drop of the green flag in the 40-lap main event. Following two complete restarts without a lap scored on the board, Todd Baer overtook Creveling. Tommy Wanick III ran third, with Barry Callavini and Jim Bojohnny in tow.

A red flag stalled the action when Dave Schneider got into Keith Bachman in turn one. Bachman then slid up the track and into Bojohnny, who then slammed the retaining fence. Ken Vogel, Jr. and E.J. Heim were also collected. Even though he took a hard hit, Bojohnny did not appear to be injured, as he climbed from his racecar under his own power.

Green flag racing resumed and Nick Pecko cracked the top five, then got by Creveling for fourth on lap three. Two laps later he overtook Callavini for third and then Bobby Jones grabbed fourth.

Kyle Ebersole started in fourteenth and cracked the top five in a hurry. Pecko overtook Wanick for the second spot on lap nine and set his sights on the leader.

Meanwhile, Ebersole got by several drivers that were ahead of him and then reeled in Pecko. He completed the second place pass on lap 11.

A quick caution for water on the speedway set up a lap 18 restart and Ebersole powered his way into the lead.

Uncontested over the remaining caution-free 22 laps, Ebersole took his second straight victory over Baer, Jones, Pecko and Brian DeFebo.

Heat race victories went to Allen Creveling, Todd Baer and Kyle Ebersole.

Jeff McGrath started from the pole position and led the opening circuit of the 25-lap Street Stock feature over Chris Burge, Mike Garris, Sr., Dale Santee and Daryn Miller.

Garris overtook Burge for second on lap one and then began to pressure McGrath for the lead.
Garris gave McGrath a shot to get him out of shape and then drove to the bottom of the track to take the race lead on lap five. His lead however was short-lived, as McGrath tried the same thing in turn one on the following lap.

Garris spun and then was t-boned by Burge, who had nowhere to go. Chip Wanamaker and Justin Mooney were also collected in the incident.

Shultz inherited the race lead with Santee in second for the restart. Robert Fink ran third with Joe Hoffman and Miller rounding out the top five.

Shultz distanced himself from the field in the latter stages of the race and Wanamaker mounted a charge back towards the front. Hoffman climbed to second on lap 13, but then he was forced to surrender the position to Wanamaker on the following circuit.

With a straightaway advantage over Wanamaker, Shultz pulled out his fourth win of the season. Hoffman, Fink and Miller completed the top five.

Jay Skupski sat on the pole for the 20-lap FWD feature and trying to get a lap scored in the early portion of the event nearly seemed impossible. Following a tangle with Dan Freundt and then another with Skupski and Trevor Ahouse, Eric Banashefski held the lead.

Using a cone racing format and with $2,000 on the line for the winner of the 75-Lap Modified main event Saturday at Mountain Speedway, Kyle Ebersole of Hummelstown stayed clear of trouble and then held off point leader Bobby Jones to score his first race of the season at the speedway. In dominating fashion, Chip Wanamaker of Walnutport went on to take the checkers in the Street Stock feature and Pete Verwys of East Stroudsburg notched his first FWD win of the year.

Time trials were held to set the field for the start of the 75-lap Modified main event and Kyle Ebersole ran the quickest lap, with an impressive 13.307. He redrew the pole and led the opening circuit of the event over Todd Baer, Mike Speeney, Rusty Smith and Ken Vogel, Jr.

The red flag waved on lap three when Dan Speeney spun in turn one. In an attempt to avoid the incident, Dave Schneider also spun and faced oncoming traffic. With nowhere to go, Barry Callavini climbed up the front of Schneider’s car, which launched his machine into the retaining fence. Luckily, Callavini was not injured, but the damage was too severe for him to continue.

Several yellow flags plagued the event in the early going, including an incident on lap 14, which involved some racing contact between Bobby Jones and M. Speeney. Schneider was also collected in the turn two tangle and all three drivers were forced to the rear of the field for the restart.

A cone was placed in the middle of the start/finish line during each yellow and drivers had the choice to take the top or bottom lane for the restart. During this particular yellow, Nick Pecko chose the outside and moved from fifth to second behind Ebersole.

Green flag racing resumed and Brian DeFebo joined the mix up front. He held third and then shot by Pecko for second. He then reeled in the leader and over took Ebersole for the top spot on lap 40.

A quick yellow flag flew on lap 49 and the pits suddenly got busy. With the exception of DeFebo, Pecko and Allen Creveling, all of the other racers pitted. M. Speeney came out to restart fourth and Ebersole was fifth.

Green flag racing resumed and the yellow flew again, this time on lap 51 when Pecko appeared to cut down a tired and rode nearly the entire length of the front stretch wall. He was unhurt but did retire from the race.

With the green flag back out, M. Speeney quickly moved to second and then overtook DeFebo for the lead on lap 55. His lead however was short-lived, as he spun at the end of the backstretch on the following lap. Baer caught a piece of the incident and his car was towed back to the pits with fairly substantial damage. The change of events gave the lead back to Ebersole with Jones in second.

Green flag racing resumed and Jones pressure Ebersole for a few laps. With Vogel running third, Rusty Smith moved to fourth and M. Speeney moved back into the top five.

Ebersole continued in front over the closing laps and took his first victory of the season over Jones, Vogel, Smith and Speeney.

Sam Grow started from the pole in the 25-lap Street Stock feature but was scored second to Jeff McGrath when they crossed the stripe to complete lap one. Mike Garris, Sr. held third, followed by Bernie uphold and Chris Burge.

Garris overtook Grow for the second spot on lap three and tried to reel in McGrath and then Burge took the spot from Garris. Meanwhile, Steve Shultz, Chip Wanamaker and Justin Mooney cracked the top five.

Shultz climbed to second and following a quick lap five yellow, he lined up alongside McGrath for the restart. Green flag racing resumed and Shultz got into the back of the leader as the entered turn one. The contact caused McGrath to spin and Bill Verwys, Uphold and Daryn Miller were collected in the incident. Shultz and the others involved were sent to the back for the restart, which handed the lead to Burge. Wanamaker held second at that point, followed by Garris, Keith Frankenfield and Dale Santee.

With the green flag back out, Wanamaker grabbed the top spot with an outside pass on lap seven and then began to put some distance on second. Garris overtook Burge for second on lap nine and Santee followed to third.

McGrath made his charge back toward the top five and grabbed that spot from Mooney on lap 16. However, his luck changed when he received a flat tire with two laps remaining.

Untouchable over the closing laps, Wanamaker went on to take the checkered flag for the fourth time this season. Garris finished as the runner up, followed by Burge, Mooney and Uphold.

Heat race wins went to Chip Wanamaker and Jeff McGrath.

The top five ran side by side and nose to tail during most of the event and it appeared that anyone could come out with the victory, but in the end it was Verwys in victory lane, as he claimed his first win of the season.
