The work was successful and the racing went off without a hitch. Kyle Ebersole of Hummelstown, PA drove to the front and then cruised to his second straight Modified victory. Steve Shultz of Drums notched his fourth Street Stock feature win of the season and Cody Roth of Kunkletown, PA steered clear of trouble to score his second FWD main event win of the year.

Allen Creveling led the Modified field to the drop of the green flag in the 40-lap main event. Following two complete restarts without a lap scored on the board, Todd Baer overtook Creveling. Tommy Wanick III ran third, with Barry Callavini and Jim Bojohnny in tow.

Bachman then slid up the track and into Bojohnny, who then slammed the retaining fence. Ken Vogel, Jr. and E.J. Heim were also collected. Even though he took a hard hit, Bojohnny did not appear to be injured, as he climbed from his racecar under his own power.

In dominating fashion, Chip Wanamaker of Walnutport went on to take the checkers in the Street Stock feature and Pete Verwys of East Stroudsburg notched his first FWD win of the year.

Time trials were held to set the field for the start of the 75-lap Modified main event and Kyle Ebersole ran the quickest lap, with an impressive 13.307. He redrew the pole and led the opening circuit of the event over Todd Baer, Mike Speeney, Rusty Smith and Ken Vogel, Jr.

The red flag waved on lap three when Dan Speeney spun in turn one. In an attempt to avoid the incident, Dave Schneider also spun and faced oncoming traffic. With nowhere to go, Barry Callavini climbed up the front of Schneider’s car, which launched his machine into the retaining fence. Luckily, Callavini was not injured, but the damage was too severe for him to continue.

Several yellow flags plagued the event in the early going, including an incident on lap 14, which involved some racing contact between Bobby Jones and M. Speeney. Schneider was also collected in the turn two tangle and all three drivers were forced to the rear of the field for the restart.

A cone was placed in the middle of the start/finish line during each yellow and drivers had the choice to take the top or bottom lane for the restart. During this particular yellow, Nick Pecko chose the outside and moved from fifth to second behind Ebersole.

Green flag racing resumed and Brian DeFebo joined the mix up front. He held third and then shot by Pecko for second. He then reeled in the leader and over took Ebersole for the top spot on lap 40.

A quick yellow flag flew on lap 49 and the pits suddenly got busy. With the exception of DeFebo, Pecko and Allen Creveling, all of the other racers pitted. M. Speeney came out to restart fourth and Ebersole was fifth.

Green flag racing resumed and the yellow flew again, this time on lap 51 when Pecko appeared to cut down a tired and rode nearly the entire length of the front stretch wall. He was unhurt but did retire from the race.

With the green flag back out, M. Speeney quickly moved to second and then overtook DeFebo for the lead on lap 55. His lead however was short-lived, as he spun at the end of the backstretch on the following lap. Baer caught a piece of the incident and his car was towed back to the pits with fairly substantial damage. The change of events gave the lead back to Ebersole with Jones in second.

Shultz and the others involved were sent to the back for the restart, which handed the lead to Burge.

For the first time in fourteen months, the Race of Champions Modifieds competed at the half mile high banked concrete oval, Shangri-La II Motorspeedway in Tioga Center, NY last Saturday night. The race was the fourth RoC race scheduled at the ASA member facility during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, but the last two scheduled events have been lost to rain. The RoC Modifieds and Speed STR’s joined the RoC Modifieds, ASA Latemodels, Sportsman and Street Stocks in a full night of racing activity. The competitors showcased their talents before the largest grandstand crowd of the season on a beautiful and comfortable summer night. The on track action began following the singing of the national anthem by 7 year old Baylee Morrison. Baylee is a student at the Hochstein School of Music and is a National American Miss state finalist. Her parents are avid RoC Tour and NASCAR Whelan Modified Tour fans, and the family made their first trip to Shangri-La II.
There were 29 RoC Modifieds on hand, competing in three heat races. All of the divisions made it through the heat races with little to no problems. 12 Modified drivers took part in the re-draw with heat race winners Jimmy Zacharias, Chuck Hossfeld and Chris Whitenight drawing starting positions 6, 10 and 9 respectively. It took until the ninth driver to re-draw to pull a top 4 starting spot. Oxford, NY’s Rusty Smith was that ninth driver, and he drew the Pole. The final driver to draw, Kyle Ebersole, started on the outside of the front row. The 26 car Modified feature began under Gary Folk, Jr’s green flag. Ebersole quickly captured the front spot by passing polesitter Smith in turn two of the first lap. The first of nine cautions flew on lap 17 after Chris Whitenight and Doug Reaume got together in turn 4. The field remained under the green flag until the second caution flag appeared on lap 41. Five more cautions slowed the racing through lap 62. Hirschman followed Ebersole for 30 laps, but had a run on lap 72 and took the lead when Ebersole slipped coming off turn four. One final caution on lap 97 set up a tremendous restart with Ebersole right on Hirschman’s rear bumper. Hirschman held off Ebersole on for his second Tour win of the season, and his first ever win at Shangri-La II. Ebersole’s second place finish was also his best finish at Shangri-La II. Ebersole finished fifth in the May 2010 RoC event and third during a regular feature on August 5th, 2010. Erik Rudolph started in the fifteenth position, and used patience in working his way toward the front. The Ransomville, NY driver passed cars on the inside and on the outside, but could not take advantage of the late race restart to make a bid for the win and took the checkers in third. Rudolph finished fifth in the May, 2010 event. Rusty Smith tried to have everyone think he was disappointed when he drew the Pole starting position, but Smith had a good run, remaining in the top 5 all race long, finishing fourth. Jan Leaty improved three spots from where he started to finish in fifth place. Daren Scherer captured the Hard Charger Award, passing 14 cars from his twentieth starting spot to finish sixth. Earl Paules and Chuck Hossfeld pitted for a right rear tire change on lap 62, and quickly began working toward the front of the pack. Paules finished eighth. Hossfeld was involved in the final caution on lap 97, and wound up finishing fourteenth.

The Speed STR’s made their second and final appearance of the season at “The Concrete Castle” with Kyle Hieber keeping the winning in the family. Kyle started fourth after winning his heat race. He quickly took the lead as lap 1 was being recorded. He never looked back, and captured his first win of the season, and his first win at Shangri-La II. Chris Stockham started sixth and challenged for the win in the late laps, but had to settle for second. Paul Lotier, Jr was the winner of the second heat, but finished third after starting fifth. Tyler Potts and Justin Thompson completed the top five.

Sportsman action saw defending division champion, Jimmy Zacharias collect his third win of the season. Zacharias took the top spot away from 2010 track rookie of the year, Bryan Sherwood on lap 10. In the previous features this season, Zacharias generally runs away from the pack once out front but, Saturday night, Rusty Smith run out of laps as he ran down Zacharias finishing second by half a car length at the stripe. Sherwood held off John Wilbur for third and Zack Curren completed the top five in his first appearance of the season.

The ASA Latemodels ran a 25 lap feature with Jerry Dineen and Joe Brown on the front row. Brown took the lead on lap 1, and pulled away from Dineen. Jim Lamoreaux started fourth and got by third place starter Joseph Burns by lap 5. Matt Barhdt , in his first Shangri-La II start of the season, started fifth, and quickly showed he was the car to beat. Barhdt got by Brown on lap 14 to pull away for his first ever win at the track. Lamoreaux finished second with Brown, Dineen and Burns completing the top five. The race went caution free.

Street Stocks completed the racing program. Gil Sharpsteen and Chris Zacharias led the field to the green flag. Zacharias took the top spot on lap 1 and held the top spot for the first eight laps until Gil Sharpsteen took the lead. Lee Sharpsteen started eighth, and quickly gave challenge to his brother. It only took Lee one lap to pass Gil. Lee held on for his fifth consecutive race win to remain undefeated at the track this season. Gil Sharpsteen finished second with Billy Coyle, Zacharias and Cricket Clonch completing the top five in the two flag race.

The most talked about 50/50 was decided Saturday night. The $ 1,003.00 which was not claimed on May 16, 2010 (the first RoC Modified race) was added to the 50/50 from Saturday night. The total amount to be awarded added up to $ 2,551.00 and RoC Modified feature winner pulled and announced the winning number. Chris Zacharias thought he had the winning number and came forward to see if he indeed had the ticket. Earlier in the night, RoC Administrative Director Andrew Harpell brought a donation to Chris which was collected at Five Mile Point Speedway for the family of Brianna Baker. Baker was seriously injured in a Microd accident at the Finger Lakes Microd Club. Chris used a twenty dollar bill from the money to buy tickets for Brianna. At the end of the night an emotional Zacharias anxiously watched as track officials reviewed his bunch of tickets. There, in the bunch was the winning number. Zacharias was elated as he saw the two matching ticket halves and proclaimed Brianna “Boo” Baker as the winner of the 50/50. He was going to deliver the money to the Baker family on Sunday. In addition to the money from Shangri-La II, Five Mile Point Speedway collected $ 537.00 and the RoC Dirt Sportsman race winner on 7/5/2011 Nick Petrilak donated $ 250.00 for a grand total of $ 3,338.
